Shelter

Sheltered bays around Çeşme and Karaburun

Rota27 August 20265 min

The Çeşme peninsula is used to wind — the reason windsurfers come here is the same reason sailors are wary of it. So does this coast actually have closed bays?

For all 25 anchorages around Çeşme, Karaburun and the Gulf of İzmir we cast rays in 16 directions and computed the distance the wind runs unobstructed over water (the fetch). The answer is two-sided: the region is better than expected and more open than expected.

Where do the numbers come from? These measurements are computed from the OpenStreetMap coastline. A fetch under 2 km counts as "sheltered" — no meaningful sea can build over that distance. This is a calculation, not a field survey: it knows nothing about shoals, rocks, current or holding.

Three bays closed from all 16 directions

Three of the 25 come out fully sheltered. What separates them is their longest fetch:

BayShelterLongest fetch
Kokar Koyu16/16682 m
Eğri Liman16/161,072 m
Beyaz Kayalar16/161,687 m

Kokar Koyu is the tightest of the three: whichever way you look, there is no more than 682 m of open water. That makes it one of the most enclosed bays on the Turkish coast — but not the most enclosed; at Knidos, on the tip of the Datça peninsula, the same figure drops to 120 m.

Full shelter by region on the Turkish coast

Three on its own says nothing. Put the five regions we have measured side by side and Çeşme's position becomes clear:

RegionBays16/16Share
Bodrum, Gökova and Datça44613.6%
Çeşme, Karaburun and İzmir25312.0%
Çanakkale and Gökçeada1915.3%
Fethiye and Göcek4124.9%
Marmara Islands3712.7%

By share of fully sheltered bays, the Çeşme area comes second on the Turkish coast — surprising, given its reputation for wind. The cause is the same geography: a deeply indented peninsula produces a great many small, deep inlets.

But half of them are open to the horizon somewhere

The other side of the coin: across the region the median longest fetch is 20,000 metres — more than half the bays are open to the horizon in at least one direction. Being closed to the north-west is not enough on its own here.

The six bays with the shortest north-west fetch:

BayShelterNW fetch
Gümüşkoy11/1618 m
Beyaz Kayalar16/1633 m
40 Dilim14/1640 m
Akbük Kuyu10/1640 m
Eğri Liman16/1665 m
Kokar Koyu16/16117 m

Gümüşkoy is closed to the north-west at 18 m but scores 11/16; Akbük Kuyu is closed at 40 m and scores 10/16. Both will do the job in the meltemi and neither will if the wind goes south. The same table also holds three 16/16 bays — the difference is in how many directions they close off.

What the number does not tell you

A fetch measurement gives the distance the wind runs over water. What it does not give:

  • Holding — this measurement knows nothing about whether the anchor will bite
  • Katabatic gusts — in narrow, steep-sided bays wind can accelerate down the slope; the fetch may be short but the load on the anchor is not
  • Crowding — in August a 16/16 bay may simply be full
  • Shoals, rocks and current

The bays above are a selection from the 25 anchorages in the region. Rota holds the same 16-direction measurement for all 466 anchorages — you can see which bay is closed from which direction, bay by bay.

This measurement exists for all 466 anchorages
