Zenbilci Koyu20.000 m6 m
Bostancı Koyu20.000 m9 m

Bu koylarda rakamlar tek haneye iniyor — kıyı rüzgârın önünü neredeyse tamamen kesiyor. Ama karşı yönde hiçbir engel yok. Rüzgâr dönerse kalkmak gerekir.

Sayının söylemedikleri

Fetch ölçümü rüzgârın su üstünde kat ettiği mesafeyi verir. Vermediği şeyler:

  • Dip yapısı — demirin tutup tutmayacağını bu ölçüm bilmez
  • Yamaçtan inen rüzgâr — dar ve dik kıyılı koylarda rüzgâr yamaç boyunca hızlanabilir; fetch kısadır ama demire binen yük kısa değildir
  • Rüzgârın döneceği an — tek yönlü korunak, rüzgâr dönene kadar korunaktır
  • Sığlık, kayalık, akıntı ve deniz trafiği

Bays closed to the poyraz and the lodos in the Sea of Marmara

Rota27 August 20265 min

In the Aegean the question is whether a bay is sheltered from the meltemi. In the Sea of Marmara the question changes: here there are two winds and they come from opposite directions. The poyraz from the north-east, the lodos from the south-west. A bay does not have to be closed to both — and usually it is not.

For all 37 anchorages around the Marmara Islands and the Kapıdağ peninsula we cast rays in 16 directions and computed the distance the wind runs unobstructed over water (the fetch).

Where do the numbers come from? These measurements are computed from the OpenStreetMap coastline. A fetch under 2 km counts as "sheltered" — no meaningful sea can build over that distance. This is a calculation, not a field survey: it knows nothing about shoals, rocks, current or holding.

The region at a glance

MeasureResult
Anchorages37
Poyraz fetch (median)449 m
Lodos fetch (median)52 m
Closed to the poyraz26
Closed to the lodos30
Closed to both19
Sheltered from all 16 directions1

At first glance that is reassuring: 19 of 37 bays are closed to both winds. The last line spoils it — there is exactly one bay in the region that comes out 16/16. And of those 19 bays closed to both winds, 15 are open to the horizon in some other direction. In the Marmara, "sheltered" usually means "sheltered from today's wind".

Closed to both winds

The six bays with the shortest poyraz and lodos fetches:

Doğu Koyu15/1622 m72 m
İncir Koyu12/1623 m39 m
Burtik Koyu14/1635 m40 m
Akaçlar Koyu11/1646 m74 m
Hiliköy Koyu14/1692 m24 m
Batı Koyu16/1697 m12 m

Batı Koyu is the region's only 16/16, and what sets it apart from the rest of the list is clear: even its longest fetch is just 1,759 metres. The others are closed to the poyraz and the lodos but see up to 20 km of open water in some direction. Doğu Koyu, at the other end of the same island, follows at 15/16.

Choosing by the wind

For the remaining bays the choice is one-sided. One group works in the poyraz, the other in the lodos — and the price of choosing the wrong one is 20 km of fetch:

Shelter in the poyrazPoyrazLodos
Kucukova Cove3 m3,302 m
Bekir Koyu3 m15,304 m
Makara Koyu11 m18,303 m
Shelter in the lodosPoyrazLodos
Kamini Koyu20,000 m5 m
Zenbilci Koyu20,000 m6 m
Bostancı Koyu20,000 m9 m

In these bays the figures drop into single digits — the shore blocks the wind almost completely. But in the opposing direction there is nothing at all. If the wind shifts, you move.

What the number does not tell you

A fetch measurement gives the distance the wind runs over water. What it does not give:

  • Holding — this measurement knows nothing about whether the anchor will bite
  • Katabatic gusts — in narrow, steep-sided bays wind can accelerate down the slope; the fetch may be short but the load on the anchor is not
  • When the wind will shift — one-sided shelter is shelter only until it does
  • Shoals, rocks, current and shipping traffic
Rota is not an official navigational publication. These calculations are based on open data and their accuracy is not guaranteed. For navigational decisions, official charts, current notices to mariners and your own seamanship are what count.

For your own route

The bays above are a selection from the 37 anchorages in the region. Rota holds the same 16-direction measurement for all 466 anchorages — you can see which bay is closed from which direction, bay by bay.

This measurement exists for all 466 anchorages
