Meltem estiğinde Gökova'da nereye sığınılır

Rota31 Temmuz 20264 dakika

Long Harbor16/16931 m931 m
Hırsız16/16152 m1.833 m
Karacasöğüt16/16201 m1.859 m

Meltem sertleşirse: fetch'i 30 metrenin altında olanlar

KoyKorunakKB fetchK fetch
Maden15/1627 m24 m
Büyük Çatı15/1628 m27 m
Gerence (Armonika)14/1633 m33 m

Bu üçünde kuzeybatı fetch'i 30 metre civarında.

Shelter

Where to shelter in Gökova when the meltemi blows

Rota31 July 20264 min

Through July and August the Aegean wind blows mostly from the north-west. It builds through the afternoon and peaks towards evening. When you are looking for a place to anchor in Gökova, the question really comes down to one thing: is this bay closed to the north-west?

This article answers that with measurement rather than guesswork. For every anchorage in Rota we cast rays in 16 directions and compute the fetch — the distance the wind crosses unobstructed. Short fetch means there is no room for waves to build; the bay is sheltered from that direction.

Where do the numbers come from? These figures are computed from the OpenStreetMap coastline. A fetch under 2 km counts as "sheltered" — no meaningful sea can build over that distance. This is a calculation, not a field survey: it knows nothing about shoals, rocks, current or holding ground.

The four bays most closed to the north-west

Four places in the Gulf of Gökova come out sheltered from all 16 directions. All four are effectively closed to the north-west:

BayShelterNW fetchBay opening
Çanak Koyu (English Harbour)16/1671 m352 m
Long Harbor16/16931 m931 m
Hırsız16/16152 m1,833 m
Karacasöğüt16/16201 m1,859 m

Çanak Koyu has the clearest numbers: only 71 metres of open water to the north-west. The whole bay opening is 352 metres — a narrow mouth, and every direction closes once you are inside. It is not an accident that it is known as English Harbour.

Karacasöğüt is wider (1,859 m opening) yet its north-west fetch is still 201 metres. A wide bay does not have to be open in every direction; what matters is which way the wind comes from and how far it runs.

If the meltemi hardens: fetch under 30 metres

Two more bays are not 16/16 but are exceptionally closed to the north-west. Their overall shelter score is lower because they are open from other directions — but for the meltemi they are exactly what you want:

BayShelterNW fetchN fetch
Maden15/1627 m24 m
Büyük Çatı15/1628 m27 m
Gerence (Armonika)14/1633 m33 m

North-west fetch in all three is around 30 metres — the shore cuts the wind almost completely. In return, all three are open from southerly or easterly directions, so the picture changes if the wind backs. Shelter is not one number; it is a question about direction.

What the number alone does not tell you

A bay that scores "16/16" is not safe in every condition. The measurement only tells you whether the shore blocks the wind's path. It knows nothing about:

  • Depth and holding ground — whether the anchor will bite
  • Katabatic gusts — in narrow, steep-sided bays wind can accelerate down the slope; the fetch may be short but the load on the anchor is not
  • Crowding — in August a 16/16 bay may simply be full
  • Current and shoals
Rota is not an official navigational publication. These calculations are based on open data and their accuracy is not guaranteed. For navigational decisions, official charts, current notices to mariners and your own seamanship are what count.

For your own route

The six bays above are only a handful of the 200-plus anchorages in and around Gökova. Of the 200 anchorages we hold on the Turkish coast, 119 come out sheltered from the meltemi directions (N, NNW, NW). You can see which bay is closed from which direction, bay by bay, on the map.

This measurement exists for all 466 anchorages
