Korunak

Shelter

Sheltered bays around Bodrum, Gökova and Datça

Rota27 August 20265 min

The most cruised stretch of the Turkish coast is also the most forgiving. That is easy to say and harder to measure. For all 44 anchorages from the Bodrum peninsula through the Gulf of Gökova to the tip of Datça we cast rays in 16 directions and computed the distance the wind runs unobstructed over water (the fetch).

The result sets this region apart: 32 of the 44 bays are closed to both the meltemi and the lodos. Which direction the wind is blowing from matters far less here than elsewhere.

Where do the numbers come from? These measurements are computed from the OpenStreetMap coastline. A fetch under 2 km counts as "sheltered" — no meaningful sea can build over that distance. This is a calculation, not a field survey: it knows nothing about shoals, rocks, current or holding.

Two winds, the same bays

MeasureResult
Anchorages44
Meltemi (NW) fetch, median201 m
Lodos (SW) fetch, median177 m
Closed to the meltemi38
Closed to the lodos38
Closed to both32
Sheltered from all 16 directions6

Comparison is what gives that number meaning. In the Sea of Marmara 19 bays were closed to both main winds — but 79% of them were open to the horizon in some other direction. Here the same figure is 34%. The region's median longest fetch is 12.6 km; in the Marmara and around Çeşme that value sits at 20 km, the ceiling of the measurement.

The most enclosed anchorage on the Turkish coast

Every bay below is closed to both the meltemi and the lodos. They are ordered by longest fetch — how much open water there is in the worst direction:

BayShelterLongest fetch
Knidos Antik Liman16/16120 m
Bozburnu Liman16/161,734 m
Okluk Koyu15/162,184 m
Selimiye Koyu14/162,517 m
Kuyucak Koyu15/163,362 m
Pabucburnu14/163,870 m

Knidos is not just the tightest on this list but the most enclosed anchorage on the whole Turkish coast: whichever way you look, there is no more than 120 m of open water. Of the 466 bays we measured, only one is tighter, and it is in Greece (Red Rock, 67 m). The people who built a harbour here two thousand years ago did not have the number, but they had the result.

Bencik Koyu does not make the table — its longest fetch is 9.2 km — yet it is closed at 180 m to the meltemi and 452 m to the lodos. That is exactly why it is spoken of as a storm hole: closed in the directions that matter.

Gökova has its own story

We covered the Gulf of Gökova inside this region separately, for the meltemi in particular: 71 m of north-west fetch at Çanak Koyu, 27 m at Maden. Where to shelter in Gökova when the meltemi blows →

What the number does not tell you

A fetch measurement gives the distance the wind runs over water. What it does not give:

  • Holding — this measurement knows nothing about whether the anchor will bite
  • Katabatic gusts — in narrow, steep-sided bays wind can accelerate down the slope; the fetch may be short but the load on the anchor is not
  • Crowding — this is the busiest cruising area in Turkey; in August a 16/16 bay may simply be full
  • Shoals, rocks and current
Rota is not an official navigational publication. These calculations are based on open data and their accuracy is not guaranteed. For navigational decisions, official charts, current notices to mariners and your own seamanship are what count.

For your own route

The bays above are a selection from the 44 anchorages in the region. Rota holds the same 16-direction measurement for all 466 anchorages — you can see which bay is closed from which direction, bay by bay.

This measurement exists for all 466 anchorages
